I was 27 — three months before I turned 28 — when the doctor diagnosed Crohn's disease. Anyone who knows about it knows what goes through your head. Everything that seemed normal suddenly became a question. What can my body still do? What am I still allowed to plan? What if I'm right in the middle of it and it doesn't work out today?

I had danced ballet as a child, but a back condition had put an end to that early on. The dance remained — in clubs, for myself, just because moving felt good. After the diagnosis, dancing became something else. It became the hour a week that I didn't think about my body, wasn't busy with what wasn't possible. On the salsa floor, I was just Vanessa. Not the patient. Just someone who moves.

That may sound big. But I think many dancers recognise that, even without a chronic illness. That evening of the week when you forget everything else for a while. Where your head is empty and your feet do the work. Dancing gives you that.

Why I started this shop

Finding good dance shoes was a nightmare. Especially in the Netherlands. Wrong sizes, unclear size charts, shoes that looked nice but hurt after an hour. Returning, reordering, doubting again. With a body that doesn't always cooperate, you don't want that extra hassle. You just want the right shoe, the first time, without any fuss. In 2007 I started the webshop to buy dance shoes. Not with a business plan, but because I wanted the solution I needed myself. We have been running for years now, shipping to more than 20 countries in Europe and helping dancers of all levels — from beginners looking for their first salsa dance shoes to advanced dancers who know exactly what they want but can't find it anywhere.
